Our Little Garden

My Grandma and Pawpaw had always had a big garden. We lived close enough to them that we helped plant, pick and can all the produce. It was awesome...to eat. I'm not sure you can call the work awesome, but it was so worth it!

The last couple of years with my Pawpaw's passing and life changing we haven't had a garden and we have missed it! This year we are trying a technique called Square Foot Gardening. It is basically raised bed gardening. My Mom has ten boxes at her house. My sister in law, Michelle, has three boxes plus two other raised beds at the lakehouse. I wasn't confident our backyard got enough sun, so our solution was to do some "mini" boxes for us to "experiment with. Our little boxes are 2 ft by 2 ft instead of the regular 4 ft by 4 ft.

Keith cut our boxes and Carli and I got to work!

First we put down some newspaper and wet it down to act as a weed barrier. Then we spread out our food compost. Yes, we actually did some composting! We used the bokashi fermentor method which worked out well! We covered our compost with some old potting soil.

Next we mixed our soil. It was 1/3 Vermiculite, 1/3 Peat Moss and 1/3 Compost (AKA Chicken poop). Carli worked really hard at the mixing part!
After we got it mixed up, Carli used her hand shovel to put it in our boxes...I finally helped since it was going to take awhile doing one little scoop at a time!

We did this all in about 45 minutes on a Saturday night. Here are our three boxes ready for planting!

Sunday after church it was time to plant!! Carli really liked this part. First we used some colorful duct tape folded in half to mark off our "square foots." Then we decided which vegetable to plant in what square foot. I think this box had okra and zucchini.

We even planted some green bean and pea seeds to grow!

Last but not least, it was time to water our little garden! Carli watered each plant very carefully, until she got to the end and the squash got jipped.

We check our garden every day! I hope the dogs stay out of it! Grammy's garden is coming a long too...just maybe we will get to each some very yummy home grown veggies this year!

Weston Lane Shelby

I am so far behind in posting...but when I get caught up, you will see how busy we have been!

At the beginning of March I got to go see my cousin Dionna and her sweet baby boy, Weston Lane. I got to get my baby fix and Dionna got an extra few hours of sleep. Not a bad trade off! Keith had a good weekend keep the girls at home. Well, kind of. The girls came and spent Saturday night with Grammy and Pa and went to church with them. It was a fun wkd for all!

Sweet baby boy cuddling in his quilt Grandma made him.

And one more sweet picture...

I had a great time getting to visit with Dionna and her sweet boy. Ron came down with a cold and was hiding in the bedroom all wkd trying to keep the others from catching it. So I didn't get to see him much, but the little I did it was fun to see him hold his new baby boy. Thanks for the visit guys! Can't wait to see you again at Easter!

I'm a Cutie Patootie!

Grammy and Pa bought Carli this shirt awhile ago - and we finally are big enough to wear it. Carli loves it because it's pink and even has a little orange in it!

We Sure Love Grandma

And we sure have missed getting to see her this week. Grandma came down with pnuemonia a couple of weeks ago. She spent a few days in the hospital and got to go home, or rather got to go stay with Aunt Carolyn till she got her strength back. Turns out, her strength kind of went ka-put! Monday Aunt Carolyn took her back to see her doctor after a very long weekend and he put Grandma back in the hospital. Grandma was not eating or drinking much and what she did get down she couldn't keep down. On the good news front, her pnuemonia is much better. They are running some test to see why she is having trouble eating and hopefully they can figure it all out so we can have our Grandma back soon!

Ava snuggling with Grandma before she left to go stay with Aunt Carolyn last week.

Carli giving Grandma some sugar.

These two little girls sure do love their Grandma! Carli was not very happy with me yesterday when we didn't stop at Grandma's house to see her. She kept telling me that Grandma was not in the hospital b/c God had made her all better. She was at home and we needed to go see her. It is really hard to argue with a 3 year olds logic!

And I thought She'd be my Tomboy...

But Ava LOVES to prance around in her high heels...

This ability must have skipped a generation b/c her Momma certainly cannot walk in high heels as well as this beautiful little princess!

The Circus...kind of...

Carli and I accompanied Logan, Aunt Chelle and Uncle Andy to the circus a couple of Saturday's ago. Carli was very excited to get to see Bears, Tigers, and Elephants. She got to see Tigers and Elephants and A LOT of women with too little clothes on. It was a very strange circus. Their main selling point was a lot of women who did crazy acrobat type stuff on ropes and that was about it. But, the kids didn't seem to mind. They were amazed with the little animals they saw and were excited to tell all who would listen they went to a circus! :)

Logan and his binoculars so he can see better!

Carli's binoculars were very elusive!
Very intrigued...
At intermission we went down to see the elephants. Carli came back and told Logan the elephants were very big and STINKY!
All smiles!
Like father...
Like son...
Logan gets it honestly. :)
The kids had a great time at the circus. The adults have vowed to only go to a larger production next time! :) It was a good learning experience to say the least.

A Sweet and Sassy Reunion

On Monday night, Sassy came over to see the girls and Keith and I went on a date. The girls hadn't seen Sassy since the beginning of January. I told them a week before that Sassy was coming to see them and every day they would ask where Sassy was. When she came through the door, it was the sweetest thing to watch. The girls were so excited to see her. Ava literally went in circles talking non-stop!

So excited to see Sassy!
(Whitey Tighty too!)
Ava even came and gave Sassy a kiss!
Sassy with Ava
Carli and Sassy are all grins!
Sassy with her girls!
The girls had so much fun getting to see Sassy again! We will for sure have to do a better job at making sure they get together more often. Tuesday morning Ava kept asking where Sassy was. Carli told her that Sassy went to school! :) We do love our Sassy!

Hi! Today we decorated Ms. Roxie's driveway. She had a rock driveway so we made special paint to put on the road. On the way home, I wen...
